The books in the series present accessible overviews of empires which lasted for hundreds of years, detailing their environments, histories, leaders, cultures, and accomplishments. Interesting introductions give readers important information and invite further exploration. The graphic elements that supplement the texts vary in their effectiveness: schematic maps are helpful, photographs of artifacts, architecture, and settings are well-chosen to augment the text, but the illustrations created specifically for the books are somewhat jarring in color and style.
